QuickBooks Desktop in 2026: what's actually happening, and what to do about it

You can stay on QuickBooks Desktop if it works for you. Desktop 2023 and older are already unsupported, new staff or new locations can't get new Pro or Premier subscriptions, and subscriber prices keep rising. Many businesses move to QuickBooks Online or another system on their own schedule. We help with the data either way: staying, upgrading to 2024, or moving.

    What's changed

What "end of support" actually means

Your software still opens and your company file is still there. What stops are the connected services that keep your books current and safe: payroll tax updates, bank feeds, payment processing, security updates and help from Intuit. Running an unsupported version works for a while, but it gets riskier every month, especially if you run payroll in it.

    Check which version you have

Open QuickBooks and press F2, or go to Help, then About QuickBooks. The year in the product name is your version.

    Your three options

Stay on Desktop or upgrade to Desktop 2024.

If Desktop works for you, you can stay. Existing Desktop Plus subscribers can renew with updates and support. If you're on 2023 or older, you're already unsupported. Desktop 2024 is current, gets periodic updates and has no sunset deadline.

    Move to Desktop Enterprise.

Enterprise is still sold to new customers in Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond editions. It is an option if new staff or locations need licenses you can no longer buy for Pro or Premier.

Move to QuickBooks Online or another system.

Move on your own schedule if another system fits your business better. Some reports and habits change, so plan the move instead of rushing it.

    What moving actually involves

Whether you're staying, upgrading to 2024 or moving, we help with the data. A move means deciding how many years of history to bring, cleaning up customer and item lists, carrying over open invoices and unpaid bills, and making sure balances tie out to the penny. We move and shape the data; your accountant handles the books. That means getting the data across clean.

    Questions people ask

No. Desktop 2024 is the current version; there is no 2025 or 2026 version. Intuit says it won't be discontinued in May 2027 and has no sunset deadline. It gets periodic updates instead.

Desktop 2023 was discontinued after May 31, 2026, and 2022 and 2021 before it. The software still opens, but payroll, payments, bank feeds, live support and security updates stop working.

New US Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions stopped after September 30, 2024. Enterprise is still sold to new customers in Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond editions. Existing Desktop Plus subscribers can keep renewing with updates and support.

No. You can stay on Desktop if it works for you. Desktop 2023 and older are unsupported, new staff or locations can't get new Pro or Premier subscriptions, and subscriber prices have risen in each of the last two years. When another system fits your business better, on your own schedule. Plan around your team's work, ideally not in the middle of year-end or tax season. Desktop 2024 has no sunset deadline.
